Funny coming back here after 5 years away from this place.

My profile page is an amusing snapshot of my life 5 years ago and it's got me all nostalgic, thinking about much things have or haven't changed:
  • It says "...has quit smoking (again)" up there underneath my username. And 5 years later, sure enough, I'm still struggling :) Let that be a lesson, kids - smoking is bad for you.
  • My listed interests are still the same. I still love websites, basketball, F1 (go VETTEL) and poker.
  • My last journal entry was about my first iPod (the first gen nano). I'm now a full Apple convert. I work/play on a MacBook Pro and an iPhone.
  • I was probably a better designer 5 years ago than I am now.
  • I'm 28 years old now, no longer 24, sadly.

Today, I'm working for an agency as a Front End Developer who gets to do fancy things with JavaScript & CSS on chunky projects for big clients. I love it.

So even though I don't do design anymore, if I hadn't joined DA nearly 9 years ago, I wouldn't have been inspired to develop my Photoshop skills ... thus never taking an interest in skinning Winamp ... therefore never taking an interest in UI design ... and possibly wouldn't have had the skills to land my first web gig years ago.

Funny how things work out :) Thanks DA!

Sticky Thoughts

My stance

Over the last two weeks i've read some pretty outrageous things on both sides of the jark fiasco. The funny thing is, during those two weeks of heavy reading, i came to rediscover what i love so much about this place.

The art!

Before all the controversy, i was a sporadic visitor at best. I only came to check on a few of my favourite deviants, see if there were any new Winamp skins and check if there were any new dA features. But then jark was fired and journals were popping up all over the place with information. Before long, i began noticing peeps were hiding their galleries -- bringing their Favourites to the top of their page. Someone's favourite would catch my eye and i would click .... and click, and click, and click ... and two hours later, i'd feel inspired. By both the art and the community that holds it together.

That's why i'm bringing my gallery out of storage.
That's why i'll continue to be a part of this amazing place.

I  this place too much.

Mind you, i'm not ignoring the whole situation. I'm very aware of it. I'm just not ignoring the rest of this place while this mess unfolds. dA is more than a news/tabloid site to me ...

Go go gadget!

For me, 2005 has been the Year of the Gadget. I've gone gadget mad. Here's a run-down of some of the significant purchases i've made these past few months:

RAZZZZZRRRRR

Great phone. Very thin ... so thin, that i lost it watching a movie  ... so i brought me one of these:

SNAP!

Grrrreat phone! Classy looking without being too 'out there'. Love the camera on it. And it takes memory cards! Something the V3 didn't do.

The phone also supported Bluetooth. So i needed to Bluetooth-ify my PC to match, of course! So i splurged and brought a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard & mouse set:

It's not usually this clean

mmmmmm, no wires :lick:
Gee, everything's looking nice and black there except for the giant 19" beige CRT. Me thinks that'll be replaced with an LCD soon :)

So anyway, i'm waiting for GTA San Andreas to be released on PC and i'm getting impatient. So i went out and brought the GT4+PS2 slimline pack to tide me over. How good is GT4? I love it. I loved it enough to go out and buy a new TV for it too ...

TEEEVEEEEEE

Anyone that's spoken to me recently will know that i've been slowly taking an interest in cars and anything motorsport-related (after being car-illiterate for the first 21 years of my life).

Well ... it's all culminated into this purchase:

RRRAAAAAWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRRRR

A Subaru Impreza WRX MY05. AWD. 168kW at the fly. 300Nm of torque. RAAAWWRRR!!

You will not believe the amount of grip this thing has. I took it to some nearby twisty mountain roads the other week and it just holds around the corners like the car's on rails.

Driving to work in the morning is 1,000,000,000,000 times more interesting now :)

And that ends this week's edition of Things stickyrice Brought That He Probably Shouldn't Have.

What things have you brought recently that you probably shouldn't have?

jark

How funny does it look? Having followed this site since '01, to me jark is deviantART. How can the man who started it all be forced out?  And how can news like this come on the cusp of the community's fifth birthday? It just doesn't compute. If i was a robot from Futurama, my head would explode.

I've hardly been around lately, so i dunno who does what around here anymore. There seems to be so much more staff around now -- there has to be. This place is huge now. All i [thought i] knew was that jark was the Big Boss Man -- or at least one of them. I thought he was the heart and soul of this place. The Grandfather. And you always knew how to treat your grandfather ...

... with respect.

Because he's been around the block. He's been kicking arse for ages. Sure, he doesn't play an active role in your life today. But he's your father's father. He laid the foundation on which you live your life today. Without him, you wouldn't exist.

And for that reason alone, you give him the utmost respect.

So when i caught wind of the news that the Grandfather of deviantART was ousted, the first thing that came to mind was ...

... "there better be a good fucking reason for this."

Because i can't imagine a scenario where the community would benefit from his complete removal. Nearly everyone views Scott as the backbone of this community. And for those that don't, you should. Because he is.

This whole thing just doesn't sit well with me. And phrases like "involuntary" and "administration deleting threads" are only adding to my indigestion of this news.

I just feel for Scott. Having given so much for long. Only to be removed by the very same people/person he defended and worked with for so long. He must feel so betrayed. I know these things don't happen without reasons. I just can't fathom a scenario that would be serious enough to warrant being completely removed after five years of blood, sweat, tears and love.

I don't give a shit what sort of disputes have been going on behind closed doors. When a man pours five years of his life into a project, he deserves to have a say in its direction. Period. I don't care where he sits in the organisational chart. So .......

... there better be a good fucking reason for this.
